Isaiah 40

A Review of Isaiah 40

Isaiah 40:1-2

In this first verse we see the LORD telling His elect to be at ease.

In verse 2 the LORD tells His elect to “speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem” or the church.  “Cry unto her that her that her warfare is accomplished” which is to say that the LORD recognizes her blatant disregard for His truth.  “… that her iniquity is pardoned:” for the LORD will pardon the iniquity of the church after the completion of Judgment Day.  “… for she hath received of the LORD’s hand double for her sins.” In this portion of the verse the LORD is assuring the church of compensation for all her sins: Ezekiel 7:3-14.  The words of Ezekiel 7 are toward the church and the world of today just as they were toward Jerusalem and Judah of old.  Also notice the LORD says “hath received”.  He speaks in the past tense because He has seen and knows from the beginning on until and even beyond the end of time or the end of this world.

Isaiah 40:3

In verse 3 we can see the LORD giving all who are His the command to take the gospel forth unto the world; to take the water of the true gospel unto the wilderness and the desert.  That all will know, whether they accept it or not, of His coming: Jude 1:14-16

Isaiah 40:4

“Every valley shall be exalted” in this instance is the LORD speaking of all His elect: Ezekiel 37:2-6.  All who are of God are lowly in this world.  Our socioeconomic status is irrelevant as all who are of God know they are only servants of our Most High God and we zealously go about doing whatever the LORD has put before us.  “Every mountain and every hill shall be made low” is speaking of the lost who, regardless of their social status, view God as they chose and therefore are not lowly servants of the LORD and their end shall be according to their works: Revelation 8:8“The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain” is the LORD bringing the last of His elect unto Himself.

Isaiah 40:5

Verse 5 is speaking of Judgment Day when “the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together”.  This will be the rapture of all the elect of God: Revelation 11:11-13.

Isaiah 40:6-8

Verses 6 thru 8 are the LORD addressing the pride of man.  He says “all flesh is grass” which is to say we will all flourish for a time and perish thereafter.  There is no glory in any of us for we are all but reeds: Isaiah 19:5-7.  However we are reminded and we must always remember the Godhead is forever.

Isaiah 40:9

In the first half of verse 9 the LORD speaks of the Zion of heaven “that bringest good tidings”.  He parallels this with “get thee up into the high mountain” therefore we see in this verse His reference to “high mountain” is not a reference to the lost.  “O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings” is the LORD refereeing to His elect on this earth.  He is telling us to “lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid”.  Here He is telling all of His elect to take His word forth unto the world without fear.  He desires that all of His elect say unto the world “Behold your God”.  If we read Mark 6:7-13 we see the LORD is telling us there how lost men supersede His law.

Isaiah 40:10

“Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him” is the LORD telling all that He shall come with a rod of iron.  He comes bringing His reward to His elect: Revelation 11:18.  He also comes at that time to bring His judgment; as His work, the work of Judgment Day, is before Him.

Isaiah 40:11

“He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather His lambs with His arms, and carry them in His bosom” is the LORD expressing His love for all His elect.  The verse concludes with “and shall gently lead those that are with young”.  This part of the verse I am not clear on.  At first glance one would think it’s the females with young children who are also elect of God.  However it could also represent those whom each of the elect have witnessed unto and the LORD, through His word, drew them unto Himself.  I am not at all certain about this so, I will not make any suppositions.

Isaiah 40:12-14

Verse 12 speaks of the glory of the LORD as only He can speak of what He has done in this verse.  From the waters to the heavens to the dust of the earth which includes man, animals and all vegetation on to the mountains and hills all of which the LORD created with a thought.  The Godhead is truly Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent as they are the three who are one: John 10:30.   He is the Alpha and the Omega and all things were and are created by Him: Revelation 4:11.

He and He alone is the designer and the craftsman by whom all that exists has been made.  No one can give wisdom to wisdom or share understanding with understanding or make available knowledge to knowledge.  He is the beginning and the end of everything therefore we must praise His holy name now, always and forever.

Isaiah 40:15

“Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance.” This is the LORD telling of the insignificants of man as He depicts men as the “small dust of the balance”“… behold, He taketh up the isles as a very little thing” is telling us, without question, the LORD views all the nations of the world as near nothing; “a very little thing”.  As all men are dust before our All Mighty God: Genesis 3:19.

Isaiah 40:16

This entire verse is a testament to the insignificants of mankind, his life and all his accomplishments.  Nothing we see, know or feel relating to this life without God means anything.  It is all a forest allowing all those who do not desire to focus on the LORD to redirect their focus into the arena of their choosing.  Unfortunately for them, all they sought and do seek is for naught as the LORD will soon require payment from everyone of them.  His elect He will save from Judgment Day and we will all go to serve Him: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.  The non-elect will be left on this sin-cursed earth for the days of torment to come: Revelation 11:13.  In Revelation 11:13 the LORD says “the tenth part of the city fell”.  The number ten and multiples of ten in the Bible mean completeness, therefore this verse is saying the whole city fell.  This is to say the whole world will fall on Judgment Day.  Seven also means completeness which is the LORD viewing the end of Judgment Day at its very beginning.  This says there will not be a remnant to give glory to God because at the end there will be none left.  It fits perfectly with Revelation 16:9 as we know lost man will never give God His glory.

Isaiah 40:17

In verse 17 we see the LORD is telling us of the things of this world including the religious leaders and scientific minds as well as the “big money makers” that have, are and will come into prominence before our end.  He says “All nations before Him are as nothing; and they are counted to Him less than nothing, and vanity”.  So, seek God with all the heart and soul you can for the understanding of His way is the prize.

Isaiah 40:18-25

In verses 18 thru 25 the LORD plainly speaks of mans desire to manufacture a god.  This has been the dilemma of mankind from the days of Enoch on until today as most men have sought their own gods.  Whether they were idols of wood, stone, silver, gold or their gods may simply be – as most are today – any interpretation of the Bible men desire.  However, the true gospel of God is not open to interpretation.

Many people today read the word of God and draw from it what they want to believe.  This invariably incorporates an obvious twisting of the truth but, to those whom the LORD has not enlightened it appears to be gospel.  In verse 18 the LORD asks the question to which there is no answer.  In verses 19 and 20 the LORD is speaking not only of the images that men make but, He is also speaking of the false beliefs men hold; as many do today.  In verses 21 and 22 the LORD is actually stating, in a way that says men do know, that He is the Almighty One.  “… and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers”.  This is what the majority of the great scientific minds do not want to accept.  They are plagued with the Napoleon complex and the truth of the LORD’s word simply will not fit with their desired perceptions of themselves; one must go.  So consequent to the ego of man they refuse the truth of God.

In verse 23 the LORD goes on telling us of His ultimate control over all the earth including men.  In verse 24 the LORD tells of His intensions for all those who refuse to give Him His glory.  “Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and He shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.” In verse 25 the LORD reiterates the question offered in verse 18; the question to which the only answer is no answer.

Isaiah 40:26

In verse 26 the LORD tells us to “lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things”.  He is the creator of all things.  No matter how they try the scientific community cannot put together a plausible theory for the creation of the universe, this world or anything on it.  Their attempts to explain the creations of the LORD without mentioning the LORD cannot even be considered feeble.

Isaiah 40:27

In verse 27 the LORD is speaking of those who think the LORD will not judge them.  It appears they believe their deeds are hidden from His sight.

Isaiah 40:28-30

In verse 28 the LORD says once more that He and God are one and together they are the Alpha and the Omega.  They are the creators of all things created and there are none that could be compared to the Godhead.

Verse 29 reiterates the LORD is the giver of all things.  If it is not His will, it will not be.  Looking at verse 30 we see it further substantiates verse 29 as without the blessing of God no man shall stand.

Isaiah 40:31

In verse 31 we see the LORD speaking of His elect; “… they that wait upon the LORD.” He will renew our strength through prayer enabling us to do all things He desires in His name.
